Sigh, I am preparing to have my first mammogram. Yeah, I know that I should have had my first one TWO years ago. I am approaching my 43rd birthday. It is important more so now, than ever before. Not for the reason that most would believe. My younger children lost their grandmother to cancer. She had breast cancer and she had a double mastectomy. She had been cancer free for years. She had gone back to year job. She was living her life, enjoying her children and grandchildren. When the cancer returned, it returned with a vengeance to her lungs. There was oxygen in the house. The woman that I had never seen smoke was now smoking with the oxygen in the house.
Back to why it has become so important to me. My children are kind of concerned that Mommy can get breast cancer and die. Thank you for reminding me of my mortality kids. So now, there are two discussions that I must have. One with my son to try to explain to him about cancer, heredity, eating right, studies research…he is just that kind of kid. The conversation with my daughter will be a bit different. It will include all of those thing but it will also include the ever so important self breast exam.
Cancer does not run in my family. I can’t think of anyone in my family that may have cancer and less more breast cancer. My best friend, Tanya, lost her mother to cancer many years go. She had been in remission then it returned with a vengeance. I did recently loose a good friend to cancer. I did have a friend at a job that detected a lump in her breast at a really young age, 26. The doctor didn’t believe her. He told her she was too young. She was persistent because she knew she had felt a small lump. Her persistence paid off because they found it and removed it.
The self breast exam is not mentioned as often as it used to be many years ago. Now, the conversation is mostly mammogram. It is very important to do the breast exam once a month. The importance of the breast exam is for early detection. How can you say you love your family if you don’t love yourself enough to take a few moments once a month to do a self breast exam? It is simple and it is one of the most important 5 minutes that you can spend with yourself a month. It can be done in the shower, in front of a mirror or lying down. For information about the breast exam go to www.nationalbreastcancer.org
Make yourself priority and take care of yourself be eating healthy, plenty of water, exercise and your monthly breast exam. There are people out there that are love you and want you around. So until next time.
Peace & Continued Blessings
