Everyday Life

How to Have A Grateful Heart

The aroma of fried turkey and mac and cheese fills our house every holiday season. Mom has been in the kitchen since last night prepping and preparing the sides. While dad has been in the backyard dropping turkeys full of the family’s secret sauce into hot oil.

Over the years preparing our thanksgiving meal has become a group effort that everyone gets involved in. While cooking all this food is a lot of work, I savor these family moments. Having moments like this always puts things into perspective and helps me reflect with grateful heart.

While this time of year makes everyone a little nostalgic, I always find myself wishing this feeling would last year around. That even after the holidays are over I would seek time with family or show gratitude. Especially when it comes to recognizing all that God has done and continues to do.

Heart Like David

In the mist of everything that’s going on in our lives and in the world we sometimes forget His presence. I know that in times of trouble, uncertainty, or lack I fail to acknowledge His grace. Just last week I was so focused on my problems that I couldn’t see He was still in control. However, in the mist of it all our soul longs to praise him and reflect on the glory of God continuously.

When I asked the Holy Spirit to guide me in what to write He pointed me to Psalm 138. This chapter illustrates the grateful heart of King David’s as he reflects on God’s faithfulness. He ends the chapter saying that he knows Lord will work out plan and that his kindness continues forever (Psalm 138:8 NLT).

David knew that he wouldn’t have made it without God’s help and guidance. This served as a great reminder that as we look back on our lives we wouldn’t be where we are today without God. So he deserves all the glory, honor, and praise for bringing us through and what is still to come.

The Grateful Perspective

At the beginning of this year I felt God was calling me to greater, but fear made me hesitate. I questioned him calling me and wondered if I even possessed what was needed to do it. However, here I am doing it by His grace and I would never have imagined myself here.

See, when I look back and see the hand of God on my life I can’t help but be mesmerized by his endless love. I can see the growth and change that’s occurred from last year to now and confidently face tomorrow because He’s with me. There is a beautiful peace in knowing the one who holds every piece of your life.

My prayer is that we will always be aware of his presence in our lives. That we will never forget that He has a plan and is working things out for our good. Most importantly, I pray that we will always glorify God with a grateful heart no matter the season.
