One day I was talking to some friends about Beyoncé and someone made the comment that many of her songs tell woman to be independent. Confused by their comment, I stated that there is nothing wrong with a woman being independent and being able to take care of herself without help. My friend replied that when it comes to dating, a woman who is consumed with being independent doesn’t have time for another person. When it comes to women is there something wrong with being too independent?
When I think of an independent woman I think of someone who is self-sufficient and able to provide their own needs. As important as this characteristic is, some women use the idea of being independent as a self-defense mechanism. To protect themselves from getting hurt or having to depend on someone they will become overly self-sufficient as a way to avoid problems.
I asked one of my single guy friends for his opinion and he said a woman that is independent is a turn on. Although, when there is a woman that’s too independent there’s no need for that guy to be around. In some situations men want to be needed in a relationship, either to help or be supportive of the other person. So when a woman is too independent and can do everything them-self, then there is no need for the man.
Being independent is one characteristic that I think a woman should have not only in the way that she carries herself, but also in her life. Although when being independent becomes overwhelming to a relationship, something has to give. At some point the wall of independence has to be put aside to better the growth of a relationship.
