Who are you turning to first when you’re faced with a problem and need advice?
Recently the Holy Spirit checked me on this because I don’t always go to Jesus first. In times of trouble my instinct is to either try to figure it out on my own or ask family and friends for help. This pattern has dependency on my own efforts or someone else’s opinion to help me get through my life.
My recently frustration stemmed from frustration with another friend and lack of communication. So I instantly started to determine what to do on my own. There I was with my pro and con list and thinking of my point of view versus their view. As soon as I was done, I was still frustrated.
So I called my mom and my best friends to get their opinion on what I should do. Here we are on this conference call like we’re in the situation room. All of this work to create a strategy on how to address my problems, and when we were done I felt uneasy.
Where We Get Advice
While my mom and friends give good advice I just didn’t have peace. It felt as though I was still missing the something, or there was another solution I hadn’t explored. In the back of my mind I know that I can talk to God. However, I always act on my instincts instead of turning to prayer.
The other day I was going to my phone to ask my friends about something that was confusing me. When I heard the Holy Spirit stop me and say that I should talk with Him about my problems. So laying there on the floor of my room I told Him everything, and for the first time peace fell over me. It was one of those feelings that assured me that everything was going to be okay.
The comfort and love I felt in that moment helped me to see what I needed to do. Laying my problems down before Him showed me that taking action against a situation can happen in many different forms. The best thing we can do when faced with a trial is simply be still and pray.
In Times of Trouble
I always saw myself being a burden on Jesus by always running to Him with my problems. We are never a burden to Him because as our Father wants us to rely on Him. The enemy wants us to believe that we are a burden and should rely on ourselves or others to figure out our problems.
When we are connected to Jesus, we never have to face this life alone. He’s always walking with us and the Holy Spirit is there too providing guidance. He wants us to talk to him about everything we are facing the good and the bad.
The best thing we can do when we’re in trouble is not seek advice, but hand it over to God. Going to Him has to be our first line of defense. Lay it all out and seek God’s word for guidance. Seek Jesus when you’re faced with trouble and don’t know what to do.
