Would you consider yourself a role model that someone should look up to? Looking at my life I know that I have some areas that can be a good example, but others that are still a work in progress. The thing about being a role model though is that we don’t always know when are being watched and who’s being influenced by our actions.
At times we get so wrapped up in our lives that we don’t realize that our actions have an effect on the people around us. Some of us may have siblings, children, or young people around us and without realizing it they watch and pick up on our habits. So like that Jim Carrey movie The Truman Show, all our success and mistakes are on display.
Growing up my of my good friends was always getting into trouble and getting grounded for doing crazy things out of peer pressure and curiosity. She would sneak out, go to crazy parties, and hang with a lot of suspicious characters. After high school she stopped all of this, but her little sister picked up on a lot of her tactics and did everything she did. Now her little sister is getting into trouble, skipping school, and partying a lot because she learned it from watching my friend.
In a way we all are or will be role models to someone, and they learn from both our triumphs and mistakes. While it’s great to learn both sides, we have to be aware of the lessons they provide. Regardless if we think we’re influencing others or not, people see us along with our actions are reactions. So be mindful of the role you play and model you’re setting for those looking on.
