We all have a past, but what really stands out is how each person handles it. Some of us move on and learn from our past, others repeatedly make the same mistakes, and some are constantly burdened with it. So why do people let their past define who they are and their future?
My past and my present life almost seem as though they occurred to two different people. Growing up I was shy and had low self-esteem and many times I doubted myself and my abilities to the point where I believed what other people told me that I couldn’t achieve. It took several years for me to get past my self-esteem issues and see that other people’s thought were not true.
Looking back, I could have let those people’s opinions and my low self-esteem define me, but I had to decide that was not going to be my future. I had to let go of that time to make room for new opportunities because holding onto that wasn’t going to push me forward but hold me back. The only one who can decide one’s life is the person living that life.
The only way a person’s past defines them is if they allow it to. While one’s past is a part of a their life it doesn’t represent who they are. The past is just a portion of the make up of our history, it’s up to the individual to decide what the rest of the story will be.
