What is an act of kindness worth? Even though it doesn’t have physical worth, the time we put into serving others is worth more than we know. By simply stepping outside of our world and being a source of love to another person can create change.
This journey we are on isn’t easy and many times we can become so focused on our life that we don’t see others. We lose sight of those who are hurting, lonely, and in need around us. However, as Christ-followers we are called be his hands and feet here on earth. This means not only recognizing there are people in need but actively helping them.
We never know how the smallest acts of kindness can plant a seed in someone to bring them closer to God. Simply being a listening ear, sharing words of encouragement, or giving them time changes their world. It’s in the ways that we serve and show love towards one another that God makes moves.
Small Act of Kindness
In high school I was awkward and had low self-esteem because like many teens I was trying to figure who I was. I spent a lot of time wishing I was confident, and along the way I found a friend in my English teacher. Every morning before school she would let me hang out in her classroom as she prepared for the day.
She listened to me too, encouraged and challenged me in my school work, and most of all she was there. Sometimes she would just let me sit in her classroom and read a book. Those moments meant the world to me because looking back her kindness influenced who I am today. The agape love that she showed that confused teenager has stuck with me to this day and I will never forget her kindness.
From my sophomore to senior year her kindness molded me to be more confident. When we allow ourselves to be used by God his love shines through. Servanthood is all about our willingness to be used by God to lead people to their purpose.
Knowing God’s Love
In Matthew 22 Jesus is teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven and the Pharisees ask him what’s the most important commandment. Jesus replies in verse 37-39 saying we should first love God with all heart and soul. Then as equally important we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves.
After studying this passage I noticed that in order to love others we need to know the love of God. By loving the one who is love, we can then show love to one another. When we understand the love of our Father, that He shows us constantly, we can then show the love of God to others.
1 John 4:7 tells us that God is love and that when we show love to one another we display how we are a child of God. So when we serve one another in love it’s the presence of God who lives within us that shines. That’s why it’s so important to use the freedom Christ has given us to serve one another.
Impact of Kindness
I found out recently that my English teacher passed away after bravely battling with Scleroderma for many years. She impacted the lives of anyone who she came in contact with her warm and friendly presence. Even though she’s no longer with us, her influence lives on in everyone she taught and interacted with.
God’s love changes us in the same way as he draws us close with His kindness, mercy, grace, and support. As we plant seeds of love and kindness in other our efforts will blossom in their lives in amazing ways. Our actions will leave an impression that will stick with them in their heart and live with them forever.
I want to encourage you to show the love of God to someone today by serving others. One of the most valuable ways to do this is to give your time by listening, praying, and be present. You never know how much an act of kindness can change someone’s life and transforms their future.
