One part of being in the real world is finding a way to relate and respect the different personalities of everyone that we encounter. While it can be challenging, we have to do and insure that we are also being respected in every environment. Otherwise people will determine who they treat us, and we can’t change it.
Earlier this week I was catching up with an friend and she told me about how one of her coworkers treats the receptionist in her office. The coworker is always being rude to the receptionist and talks to her any way that she feels like it because she is non-confrontational. Since the receptionist is young and not use to working in a business atmosphere she just accepts the coworkers rudeness.
No one has the right to demean us or make us feel inferior. It can be uncomfortable to tell someone to us a certain way, but we have to let them know that it’s not acceptable. There has to be a standard for what we will accept from people and if things don’t met that standard we have to address that for our sake.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,” and staying silent while someone mistreats us is consenting. No matter if it’s business or personal we have to stand up for ourselves. If we don’t do it for ourselves then who will?
